Cooper Union Develops First Academic Building in New York City to Achieve LEED Platinum Status
The College's high performance building at 41 Cooper Square was awarded LEED Platinum, the most rigorous level of certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). 41 Cooper Square is the first academic building in New York City to achieve LEED Platinum status. Davis Langdon provided cost management services as well as sustainable consulting services such as eco-charette facilitation, LEED project management, design reviews, technical support, fundraising support, and construction administration support. LEED certification of 41 Cooper Square was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the building itself and the broader community: radiant heating and cooling ceiling panels; an operable building skin; a full-height atrium; a green roof; a cogeneration plant; and flexible state-of-the-art laboratories. Designed by Morphosis, the distinctive and architecturally bold building situated on Third Avenue between East 6th and 7th Streets—a nine-story, 175,000 square foot, full-block facility—replaces almost 40 percent of the college's academic space. It was developed at a cost of $150 million and features sophisticated reconfigurable classrooms, laboratories, studios and public spaces.
