The building is to be constructed on the corner of Victoria and Swanston Streets in Melbourne at the former Carlton United Brewery site. The building will be home to RMIT's Design School which includes fashion, textile and industrial designers as well as architectural students.
The building comprises two basement levels, one of which will house an active archive and exhibition space. The ground floor level interacts with the street and includes a lecture theatre. The six tower floors have research or 'warehouse' spaces with exhibition and encounter spaces known as 'long rooms'.
The building form is simplistic however the facade pushes the boundaries of design. A double skin external wall sytem, with an external skin comprising thousands of circular discs, helps to shade the building throughout the day and is enabling the achievement of a 5 Star Green Star rating.
The Design Hub will be a centre for collaboration, a place to develop world class concepts and initiatives that will raise the profile of the university and the city. The building's spaces have been designed to encourage the cross pollination of ideas from its many design students.
It is also envisaged that the building will achieve as a minimum a 5 Star Green Star rating.
